Lessons & Lab Packages
Thinking Big   Thinking Big Possibilities:  How Far Can We Go?
Addresses concepts of size and distance as powers of ten. Images of planets and galaxies are presented in concert with inquirty based lesson and hands-on laboratory session. National Science Education Standards covered include: A, E, F, G

Bone Voyage to Mars   Bon-E Voyage in Space:  If You Don’t Use Them, You Lose Them
Addresses homeostasis of the skeleton as a dynamic tissue. Bone cells, connective tissues are discussed. The effects of microgravity on astronauts and the similar effect of long term bed rest in patients are explored. The lab involves data collection and discussion based on a fascinating, everyday occurrence. NSES covered include: A, C, E, F, G

Smells to Mars

Smells to Mars and Back:  Quality of Life Turns Life Threatening
Addresses the olfactory system, including comparative anatomy of microsmatic and macrosmatic animals. Emphasis is placed on deficiences experienced by astronauts due to body fluid distribution in microgravity. The laboratory is a hands-on scent test in which students blind-test for their ability to identify objects through odor.
NSES covered include: A, C, F, G

Balance in Microgravity   Balance in Microgravity:  Life Turned Upside Down
Addresses the neurovestibular system, particularly the anatomical features of the inner ear. Compares sense of balance in microgravity to balance in Earth's gravitational field. The laboratory allows students to experience part of the bodies vestibular adaptation system. NSES covered include: A, C, E, F, G

Communication Around 360 Degrees

Communication Around 360 degrees: Silent Speech in Space
Addresses the difficulties of communicating when spoken language is impossible. Based on the common experience of astronauts on the International Space Station, especially during spacewalks when speech is impossible. From cave painting to the Rosetta Stone to American and British Sign Languages, this lesson emphasizes that communication is not verbal only. Laboratory is a downloadable video asking students to identify a series of common gestures. NSES covered include:(to be determined)
