On December 4th, 2003, Dave Williams, physician and astronaut, visited Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  During his time here, Dave graciously appeared as the featured speaker at the Defying Gravity Assembly, “Becoming, Being and Beyond.”  Check out these pictures from our big event.

Hundreds of New York City high school students and teachers, members of the Boy Scouts of American and Girl Scouts of America, as well as medical students and faculty from Mount Sinai School of Medicine filled the Stern Auditorium for Dr. Williams’ presentation

Even before the presentation began, the crowd was fascinated by Dr. Williams’ presence.  Like a movie star, he was beset upon by children of all ages for his autograph.  Meanwhile, parents, teachers, administrators and even some members of the media took photographs from the stadium-style seating.

Defying Gravity Director, Patrick Gannon, PhD, was first to the podium.  He provided a brief history of Defying Gravity’s efforts to bring space biomedicine into the classroom and then proceeded to introduce Dr. Williams with a glowing review of his achievements as both physican and explorer.
Dave began his speech where all good education comes from: dreams and imagination.
He wanted to be an astronaut since he was seven years old.
Don’t give up on your dreams,” Williams said,
no matter where your dreams may take you. With a lot of luck, hard work, and believing in yourself, those dreams will come true.”

Fascination overtook child and adult during Dave’s talk.  He brought along a digital presentation complete with exclusive NASA video of the space shuttle mission of which he was a crewmember.
Dave’s eloquent speech and beautiful imagery captured the audience and inspired us all to follow our dreams.
At times it seemed as if Dave would drown in a sea of zealous children.  However, his cool astronaut instincts  prevailed and he escaped without missing a single autograph!

Dave was an object of great affection for the many youngsters who attended the event.  His rapport with children kept him busy signing autographs and posing for pictures long after the presentation was officially over.
